Vancouver Beach

My travel college counselor from Trinidad used to tell me ;

“Beaches in Vancouver is not the BEACH!!”

Maybe so, comparing beaches in Vancouver to blue water & white sand beaches in Trinidad.  But still, it’s nice to be at the beach, looking at mountains and listening the wave.  The Beaches ( 8~10) is very busy with locals and tourists.  It’s in downtown.  There are many cafes and restaurants near by.  Also you can ride a bike or rollerblade around Stanly Park.

I like Kitsilano ( 6 ) .  I can see mountains even while I am playing Tennis. ( the courts are bad, though )  I like quiet place to relax.  So I go to the beach or the small park between Kitsilano and Jericho ( 5 )  .

Jericho has a hostel.  This is my first roof I slept in when I came to Canada.  To go to downtown or eating is not convenience.  But it has nice view ! I remember I had a small bag of chips from a vending machine for first dinner in Canada..   It was not clean and it was dark.  Mattresses were all over.  I felt like sleeping in a prison but now it’s clean and much better.

Jericho has Tennis courts, yacht club and a cafe .  Many people come to Spanish bank for barbecue in Summer.

I love to see the Sunset from the beach.  Vancouver has the most beautiful Sunset !!

Canada is number 4!! I am surprised to see that the United States and Australia is not in top 10.  British Columbia and Alberta, we have lots of places to hike and mountain bike. It’s well-marked.  But if you are lost in mountains, we have a great rescue team, too!

35,000 people head to Everest, what will be left behind?

Reaching the top of the highest mountain, Everest is one of the mountaineer dreams and every year 35,000 people visit the mountain accompanied by 80,000 porters, to attempt to reach the top.

Isn’t that amazing number ??  They usually stay there about two months.  You can imagine how much garbage are left behind along the way.  So they start campaign;

‘Save Mt. Everest Campaign’

They even collect human waste.  The Picture below, this is a toilet tent. There is a plastic barrel underneath.  They put plastic bag inside of barrel and collect it and carry it down.   I felt sorry for that job…

The Everest base camp is on the glacier.  So it will melt and eventually it will affect a wide range.

There are so many garbage.  People keep bring stuff into the camp during the expedition.

Carrying heavy fuel for cooking and heaters

Sherpas bring heavy oxygen bottles down from higher camps.  It is very hard job.  It’s not only heavy but also working condition is tough and dangerous.

oxygen bottles

There was 8 tons of metric waste. The garbage are pipes, old ropes and tents, to plastic bottles, empty oxygen bottles, food, and medicine, not to mention bodies of those who never make it as well.  I heard that you will see unfortunate climbers left at higher altitude when you are climbing along the path in Tibet, North side.    But in Nepal South side, thanks to Sherpa, they will bring them down.

It’s a beautiful place.  We do not want to ruin it for sure.
